2022 Canada Day Celebration

2022 Canada Day Celebration

What is Canada Day?

The celebration of Canadian Confederation is commemorated on July 1, the national holiday known as Canada Day. The celebration of Canada’s birthday which was formerly known as “Dominion Day,” is celebrated annually to honor the union of the three British colonies in North America: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Provinces of Canada (Ontario and Quebec).

The British North America Act effectively united the colonies on July 1, 1867,  establishing the Dominion of Canada as a unified and independent nation. As a result, Canada became a self-ruling dominion of Great Britain.

Since 1867, Canada has expanded to encompass a total of nine provinces and three territories, the most recent of which is the territory of Nunavut, established in 1999. There are now 13 provinces and territories in the country as of now.

The History

Dominion Day was first observed in 1879, but due to the fact that many Canadians still considered themselves to be British citizens, the holiday was not widely observed. This began to change in 1917, the year that marked the 50th anniversary of the confederation. This was also the year that Dominion Day began to gain popularity. In 1946, a measure proposing to rename Dominion Day was introduced; however, the bill’s passage was impeded because members of the House of Commons could not agree on a new name for the holiday.

At the time of Canada’s 100th anniversary in 1967, there was a surge of interest in Canadian patriotism, and celebrations took off at that time. Even before the name was officially adopted in 1982, Canadians were already calling the holiday “Canada Day.” The event was finally given the name it is known by today in 1982.

The Events

The Events

The municipal governments of many towns and cities are responsible for organizing a variety of events, most of which take place outdoors. Concerts, carnivals , parades,  festivals, firework displays, and citizenship ceremonies for new Canadian citizens are some of the events that are held during these celebrations. A sense of patriotism pervades many aspects of the ceremonies. Many individuals paint their faces with red and white makeup, which are the national colors of Canada. The Canadian flag is also prominently displayed around the country. The festivities in Ottawa, which is the capital city of Canada, are known for their exceptionally joyous spirit.

On Canada Day, the Canadian national flag is flown proudly. This is made up of two vertical red rectangles that are divided by a square made of white. The leaf of a maple tree is depicted in red within the white square. On Canada Day, the colors red and white, which are Canada’s official colors, are displayed in a variety of different ways. Some people paint their faces with red and white makeup, while others wear apparel that features these colors.
